I'm super excited that I get to share the adventures of my 1st grade bilingual classroom with all of you! =)Karlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10018026459099118424noreply@blogger.comBlogger34125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2034784875538346078.post-91133216011893024802017-01-19T12:56:00.000-06:002017-01-19T13:20:04.418-06:00Let's fix this Pencil Problem, Shall we?*Mic check* Hello? Anyone there?! Lol.
So it's been two years since my last post! Wow... I'm so sorry. My life is chaos with two kids. To the person that said "One child is a pet, two is a zoo": You could not be more correct! Lol.

Anywho, a few changes have happened since I last posted:

I switched schools- BEST. DECISION. EVER.

When I made that switch, I went back to teaching 1st grade bilingual (LOVE!)

This year, I'm teaching 2nd grade.... monolingual! Interestingly enough though, I teach in a very large latino area, so the Spanglish still stands. =) Yay!

This year, has been pretty rough- I have 34 students! Yikes!

(You don't even want to know what my guided reading looks like... it's basically a juggling act [with chainsaws! LOL!])

With 34 students, you can imagine how many pencils one would usually go through in a day- the beginning of the school year had me wondering if student were seriously eating their pencils; needless to say, it was <STRIKE>a mess</STRIKE> INTERESTING to say the least!

After all the BOY (Beginning Of Year) transfers, I was FINALLY able to sort it all out! I assigned all my students a number (this is their number for the entire school year), collected ALL THE PENCILS, and got to work!

First I placed all the pencils in a plastic shoe bin similar to this one.

(Actual Picture)

Then, I got these bad boys out and numbered them 1-34.

(Actual picture)

I placed the dot labels on each pencil and then layered them with scotch tape (so that kiddos didn't take their number off).

Here's what happens afterward:

Give each child their assigned pencil.

Explain, to students that when they find a missing pencil, they need to either find its owner OR give it to the teacher.

You can do one of two things:

Give them pencils every two weeks (yes! I swear they will not lose them!)

Exchange their pencils for a new one when the old one no longer fits in your classroom sharpener.

Easy Peasy, Right?

It's kind of tedious at first, but I promise you that you'll have a bin full of pencils!

Here is an actual pic of my current pencil bin (keep in mind that I have 34 students!)... I took the picture 5 minutes before I wrote this post!

Try it out and let me know if it works for you, too!

I always tend to neglect my little blog here. =(
I was actually shocked to sign and in and realize that it was almost one year ago exactly that I posted my last post... let me tell you that it has been a busy year with many, many, many changes!

I'll start with brief family updates:
After having the baby, I went on a life hiatus. It's a pretty surreal thing to even type, but in a way I think I had a mild form of Post-Partum Depression; I wasn't unhappy with my husband or my children- I was unhappy with myself. I'll spare you the details, but just know that mentally I'm in a better place and I'm ready to take on the world! =)
My baby boy will be 14 months on the 11th. He is an amazing baby that definitely keeps me on my toes! 24 pounds of healthy meat and bones! Lol. My oldest boy, just started 3rd grade this school year. I can't believe how big he's getting and how much he's grown! It makes me sad to think how quickly time flies and how truly precious spending time with them is. Being a mom is freaking amazing!

Professional Updates:
I left my the school where I've spent most of my teaching career. I think working there was a contributing factor to my depression- I felt unappreciated, overworked, and unwanted. Who wants to feel that way in the profession of their dreams?! NOT ME! I made changes... I went on one interview and killed it! I was offered the position the next day and am back teaching a grade that I love. The only thing I miss about my last school, aside from my coworkers, is how close it was to my home! But you know what? I'll drive an extra 30 minutes for my happiness and peace of mind any day! =)
Also, I'm back at school! I'm FINALLY working on my Bilingual Endorsement. I haven't taken a college class in almost 10 years, but so far I've kept up and have managed to get good grades along the way. =)

Things are going great!

Onto my original reason for updating my blog....

October Fluency Task Cards!

I'm still here... alive... and ticking. =) I just have had my hands full lately taking care of my precious baby boy. He'll be 2 months old this Saturday and, although I am grateful that he is growing nice and healthy, I'm saddened that our time together will be coming to an end in 6 short weeks. =(

This is my baby boy! Isn't he precious?! Don't mind me... I didn't brush my hair this day. Side Note: The photo shoot was supposed to be baby ONLY. As you can see, I was NOT prepared to be in the picture! Lol.

Enough about mommyhood... I don't want to start crying mid-post. Lol.

I think in my previous post I may have mentioned that I was moved from a primary classroom to a 4th grade classroom (if I didn't mention it, I apologize. I was too lazy to check just now.) I'm still so saddened by that news. =( I'm trying to figure out how to win the lotto so I could skip this whole school year and go back for the 2015-2016 school year..... but I guess I should start playing first. Lol.
Can't believe I haven't been on here in two months. I was doing so well! I guess, I'm going to have to use pull the Pregnancy Card! Currently I am in my 9th month! I will be 38 weeks on Monday and will be induced the following Monday if baby doesn't decide to come on his own, so this may be my last post in a while (I know; Surprise, surprise. Lol.)
Many changes have happened this summer and a surprise grade change was one of them!

I guess you could now consider me a 4th grade teacher! I'm super nervous as I've been teaching 1st grade for the last three years.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to growing as an educator, but I wish I wouldn't have been changed until the following year. After all, I am having a baby and missing out on the beginning of a brand new school year and a brand new grade! I have new students to meet (we all do), rules and procedures to establish, and standardized tests to prepare them for, yet, I won't be able to do it until mid November. I fear that I'm going to return to sheer and utter chaos! UGH. It's super frustrating!

To calm my nerves a bit, I decided to write a letter to my First Day self. A letter to be written today and NOT TO BE OPENED until the first Day of School! At first, the thought was a little silly; after all, I'm writing a letter to myself! It made me feel as though I had no friends. Lol. As I began, however, it was a very calming process and made me feel more at ease. I thought it would be a good idea to share my letter with all of you and challenge you to do the same. If you can't be honest with yourself and encourage yourself in a time of need, then you need to reevaluate the kind of advice you give others... if there is anyone you could and should be honest with, it is YOU! =)
I Did It Again!
LOL. Can I just say that I couldn't let another St. Patrick's Day go by without letting you know about my mischievous actions (INSERT EVIL LAUGH HERE)!
Let me take you back to St. Patrick's Day 2013 (when I was teaching a 1st and 2nd grade split classroom)...

Linsay over at First Grade With a Twist made this adorable St. Patrick's Day Scavenger Hunt:

We did the unit and the kids LOVED it!
They used their SCHEMA! They INFERRED! They PROBLEM SLOVED! They FOUND THE GOLD! I mean, the morning, could not have gone any better!
BUT, SOMEHOW, I MANAGED TO SCREW IT UP....
We got through our activities, then the kids started hearing small random noises here and there; in there eyes it was this guy:

but in reality it was the heating vents.
No big deal right?!
WRONG!
They were OBSESSED with these noises, so I sit them on the rug and decide to look where they told me to look.
I looked in the behind the shelves, in our bathroom, in our large closet and NOTHING.
Then a student says: "Teacher, that closet wasn't open before," as she points to my smaller closet/large cabinet.
So, of course, I tiptoe toward it and, in my quietest whisper, ask "should I check in here?!" They ALL nod "yes!"....
that's when I got my sneaky idea....
I slowly open the cabinet door and as soon as it is wide open, I let out the most blood curdling scream I can possibly do! "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Imagine 30 students with the following faces:

LOL!!! Is it terrible that I found it so freaking amusing?! I mean, I was surprised there were no wet or brown spots on my classroom rug (Thank GOD!)! Thinking about that moment still tickles my funny bone. =)
By the time lunch rolled around, I could not get them to stop talking about that darn Leprechaun so I figured that while they were out of the room, I would make the naughty Leprechaun go away by leaving a trail of tiny footprints from my trashcan to the bathroom, making it seem as though he flushed himself down the toilet...
Perfect plan right?!
WRONG!!!
When I came back from lunch, I found every single one of them looking like this:

They were crying because the Leprechaun was REALLY there! Lol.
Needless to say, my plan backfired, and I vowed never to scare them again.....

Fast forward to St. Patrick's Day 2014.....
I DID IT AGAIN!
I'm FINALLY out of hibernation! Yay!!! I can't believe my last post was back in November! I've been way off track, but to be fair I've been a pretty busy gal. =)

Many things have happened since my last post, the biggest of all is.... I'm expecting baby number 2!!! I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing; after all, my first baby is going to be 7 years old in 8 days! I'm a bit nervous, as I'm due in August... right smack at the beginning of the school year. I have so many questions... when is a good time to return? Should I nurse or do formula this time around? AHHHH! Decisions, decisions.

OK, enough ranting/rambling... now that I'm feeling like I'm getting my energy back, I decided to get back into the groove of things.
In my last post I told you guys about Angeli over at Extra Special Teaching inspiring me to create a Spanish version of her November Fluency Task Cards. While <strike>stalking</strike> browsing though her TPT Store, I saw another set of cards that I thought were brilliant and thought to myself, "I sooooo need to make something like this in Spanish!"
Well, guess what?! I did!

About the product:
The full product is a set of 20 spanish task cards with repeated reading sentences; so basically it's a sentence that flows like a pyramid with each word building on the last word until a full sentence is formed. These particular cards are only include sentences with the syllables m+vowel, p+vowel, s+vowel, t+vowel and the articles "la" and "el".

Oh, and before I forget, I am well aware that the O in "Expresion" needs an accent; the font I used does not have accented letters. =( Boooooo! (lol). Karlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10018026459099118424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2034784875538346078.post-48827343442507856692013-11-13T23:09:00.001-06:002015-10-13T12:07:55.699-05:00Parent-Teacher Conferences! Yuck! Am I the only one that hates these?! Lol. I CAN'T be the only one!
This year, my students parents were all wonderful, with the exception of 1 or 2, but still I find entire day dreadful... as dreadful as checking your bank account when you know you've spent more money than you should or listening to your voicemail when you don't answer a phone call from your mother. Lol. I'm just a weirdo.

Don't get me wrong, deep inside me, I do enjoy being able to learn about my students through the formal conversations held with their parents. I had so many "a-ha!" moments yesterday that today I approached the day quite differently; which is something that may not have happened anytime soon if yesterday had not taken place. Today, was a good day. =)

To help me mentally prepare for the actual conversations, I made a sheet to help guide each conference. Over the weekend I pre-filled a sheet for each student with 2 celebrations, 2 concerns, and 2 suggestions for each child (even my Honor Roll students because there is always room for improvement). I also included a portion at the bottom for their IDEL and Mclass results.

Having this filled out before each conference gave me a peace of mind, so I decided to share it with those of you that get a little frazzled and need a little something to help guide you through the good, the bad, and the ugly conversations. =)
Doesn't it feel like our brains are on work mode 24 hours a day? I was making a purchase today and saw two children not being very friendly towards one another and I tried very hard to not to say something as I would in my own classroom, but I failed miserably and had to say something about their behavior. Needless to say it stopped, but I wouldn't be surprised if one day someone decides to punch me in the throat and tell me to mind my own business. Luckily today was not that day. =)

Teaching is a disease and there is no cure..... no one is safe around us. Lol.

Anywho, Do you guys solve a daily math problem? I started doing this a couple of years ago with my Firsties and it has been very successful in my classroom (in the past).
My first year teaching first grade I didn't do this until January (when I was sure that all but a handful could read and handle their own). Last year, I started at the very beginning of the year, but only because I had a high group of 1st and 2nd graders.... we solved a problem every day until school was out.
Below are some sample images of their P.O.D. notebooks.

Not bad for Firsties, right?

Although they have been successful before, this school year I tried to implement them a bit early, but it didn't go as well as it had in the past. Maybe the problems were a bit overwhelming for the little ones due to not all of them being able to read just yet. I'm going to try a different approach this week as I make an attempt to implement P.O.D. yet again.
For this purpose I made a cute little pack of Halloween themed word problems to get the excitement going.... I mean, who doesn't love Halloween, right?
TGFIO- Thank God Friday Is OVER! Maybe one day I'll enjoy Fridays again... in the mean time... waaaaaah (in my Snookie voice). Lol.

I'll try to stick to the REAL reason for posting without going off on a tangent about some random thing. =)

Last year, when I taught my 1st/2nd split, I was looking for a way to incorporate calendar math in my daily routine without it being too babyish for my 2nd graders or too difficult for my 1st graders; I came across this Calendar Math/Number of the Day Sheet on TPT....

(If you want a copy of the above Calendar Sheet you can click HERE)

..... it was JUST what I needed.... EXCEPT..... I needed it in Spanish!

Random thought: Why is it so hard to find resources for such a large population?! Ugh!

The resource itself was perfect, so I did the next best thing I could... I translated it. =)

Hope you all are well! I'm excited that it's Wednesday, but not excited that Friday is near. I know what you're thinking, "What the heck is wrong with her?!" Lol. Believe me, I've asked myself that same question before. Although many of us LOVE (or should love) Fridays, they are kinda dreadful and stressful around my end. We (our school staff) have to turn in parent logs, reflection logs, and grade logs by the end of our school day (3:15) and also we have to submit our lesson plans by midnight Friday evening. It's a little overwhelming to say the least. We have "Freaky Friday's" (and not freaky in a good way) rather than "Fun Friday's". LOL.

Enough of that... moving on.

Do any of you use Villa Cuentos as your reading series? I know we are in a Common Core day and age, but I still use Villa Cuentos for phonics, grammar, and extra skills practice. At our school we are required to submit 15 grades into our electronic Grade Book weekly, so our students have to constantly complete assignments, worksheets, and other mumbo jumbo so that we have stuff to grade and submit. Definitely not Best Practice if you ask me... but hey... I'm just a teacher. =/

I've created a couple of tools and assessments for a few of the lessons in Villa Cuentos. Today's post is for the story Gala y Vito or Dot and Bob. In this lesson, we are studying the V+vowel and the L+vowel syllables. The first printable has those syllables plus additional syllables to help students create the weekly spelling words.

You can get that freebie by clicking HERE

The next freebie assesses the skill for this lesson which is Characters. It also assesses comprehension by asking students about problem and solution. For number 1, students draw each character in the large boxes and write the names of each character in the small boxes beneath the larger ones (I hope that makes sense). The rest of the sheet is self explanatory, but if you have any questions feel free to ask. =)

Happy Wednesday! =)Karlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10018026459099118424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2034784875538346078.post-49817126695509233652013-09-27T21:36:00.001-05:002013-09-27T21:36:21.710-05:00A Couple of Spanglish AnchorsHi guys!

It has been a month since the Little Ones began the school year and it feels like time is going by rather slow.... Perhaps thats just me. I have a sweet group of kids... but my, oh, my.... some are going to be the death of me. Lol.

We have been working very hard (albeit, a bit slow) at establishing routines and expectations. Then just this past week, I had a sub for two days so that I could IDEL and TRC my Littles and upon receiving my classroom back again, I realized all that hard work we put in these past couple of weeks was sucked right out of them by the sub. Nice guy; bad classroom management. Lol. (Please forgive my run-on sentences; I-AM-BEAT!)

Back to my reason for this post: anchor charts.
Why are anchors in Spanish sooooooo hard to find?!
I have my own board on Pinterest from all the great finds, but man o man, it has been tough! At this point, if I find something great in English, I try to make it in Spanish. These are just a few that are hanging on my walls now.... I'll be taking pics and adding more to this post as time goes on, but for now these are the only ones worth posting about.

This is translated from a chart I found on Pinterest. Forgive me if the link to the original pin is not posted , but I'm composing this post from the Blogger App and I'm still not familiar with it. The chart is more of an anchored Rubric for creating detailed drawings or drawings that make you say "wow!" It has made a HUGE difference!
UPDATE: Click HERE for the original English Anchor

This one is not translated, I made this for my Littles as a reminder of the steps we should take during writing. Usually they have 5 steps, but I created 4 for two reasons: 1)I want them to have steps 1-4 down before we work on adding details to our words. 2)It's not a very large sheet so #5 didn't really fit. Lol.

Last, but not least, I created the infamous "3 ways to read a book" anchor. I originally found and created one similar to that of Krista's @ The Second Grade Super Kids and although her charts are AMAZING, her third step was "resumir el cuento" which is great and makes loads of sense, but to me "resumir" sounds closer "summarize" rather than "retell" so I changed it on mine. =)
Oh and also, I just noticed that you can see the one of the charts underneath this one. Oops. Lol.

Note: before theses charts were transferred to the chart paper, I wrote them (as I taught them) on our dry erase board as a draft first. When the mini lessons were done, I converted them to the charts above. There is no point in just throwing a chart on the wall if the kids don't really know what it is or why it's there.

Hope you guys have a restful weekend! =)Karlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10018026459099118424noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2034784875538346078.post-7372201659409615502013-09-07T12:48:00.000-05:002013-09-07T13:14:35.501-05:00A Tiny Glimpse into My Home Away From Home Hi, Guys! This is my 3rd week back at work (but only my second one with the Little Ones) and although I no longer have a split room, I feel more stressed now then I did at the beginning of the year last year (though, according to my husband, I say that every year. Lol.). It just feels like it's going to be a Chocolate and Coffee kind of year for me.... let's see how it goes.

After starting my 6th year of teaching, I discovered that I'm TERRIBLE at the whole "First Day of School" thing (I know, 6 years is a long time to barely notice that the First Day is not my forte, but at least I figured it out on my own). I just assume that the majority of the kiddos know each other because they come from the same Kindergarten. I dread the "getting to know you activities" and I know that they are a must, but I kind of feel that some students may dread it as much as I do. I'm a weirdo. I really need to get it together and sooner than later would be great. Lol. Any ideas on how to make this better for next year would be amazing.

Moving on.... as I was <strike>stalking</strike> exploring all the amazing blogs out there, I found myself oohing and ahhhing as I saw the many beautiful and creative ways you all decorated your rooms. Your students must never want to leave! My students on the other hand basically trample me on the way out. Lol. (That was a teeny joke). Squirrel! Sorry, back to business... as I was saying, I'm in awe of how creative and inspiring you all are. I don't have any ooh's and ahh's of my own, but I still felt like sharing what my home away from home looks like around this time of year with all of you. =)

This is what my classroom looked like when I walked through the door. I have a fairly large classroom. I'm a lucky gal.

This is how it looked after I organized the furniture. It was taken from a different angle. As you can see, my desk is in the far corner... I don't sit at it when kids are around, so I keep it out of the way.

This is what my science board looked like last year. I wanted it to look sciencey yet pretty, so I opted for flowered wrapping paper from the Target Dollar Spot instead of the typical butcher paper. I thought it was super cute! This year, it looks a little different because I wanted it to be cohesive with the rest of my classroom theme (Zebra and Neon).

This is my Morning Meeting/Math Board. The little black dots on my coin chart are magnetic dots that I bought at Lakeshore so that I can add and exchange coins easily.

This is a picture of my word wall. I used paper plates as the background for the letters. I only use this wall for English sight words. I have another word wall for my spanish words in the front of my room.

Here is a table that I dazzled up with contact paper. As you can see the table was an ugly one before the makeover. I dislike wood paneling; it reminds me of a basement. Thank goodness it no longer looks that way!

This is <strike>jewelry </strike> coin organizer that I use for behavior. Each pocket corresponds with a student. If students have 5 coins by Friday, they can buy a treasure from my treasure box. =)

This is all I have to show for now. I hope you enjoyed your tiny glimpse inside my classroom. I will try to update with pictures of my current boards so you can see the theme throughout.

I can't believe the new school year begins tomorrow. Luckily it's just a week filled with staff meetings, so it doesn't feel like "work" just yet.
In Chicago, it didn't really feel like Summer. It was pretty cold compared to last year so it kinda sucked. I didn't get to go to the pool at all (actually, I'm lying about this... I went to Vegas for the Differentiation Conference and snuck out to the pool twice). Bummer. On the bright side, I did get to spend time with my family, which is always nice. =)

Usually I have a Top 10 list, but since I only had a two and a half (yes, 2.5!) Week summer break, I could only come up with a Top 5.

Top 5 things of my Summer Break:

1) Spending time with my son and my husband.
2) Getting a puppy!
3) Going To Vegas
4) Buying a bicycle
5) Turning 30!

All good things are either too short, too expensive, or they make you fat. My summer break was all of the above! Lol.
Anywho, as I prepare my printables for the new year, I decided to share one with you.

My First post of 2013 and what a post it is! I’ve been meaning to catch up with the few of you who follow me on here (thank you, btw) on all the wild rides and funny stories that I have to share since November (has it seriously been that long?!). Before then, however, I want to talk to you about this AMAZING Pass the Torch Linky that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of.
Michelle from the3amTeacher.blogspot.com and Krista and Julie from the ReadingOlympian.blogspot.com have created an awesome “at your own pace” vocabulary program that scaffolds the learning of Latin and Greek Roots called Jr. Reading Olympians.
I was one of the approximately 90 teachers (yes you read that correctly!) who were able to implement a lesson (or more) in their classrooms.
Given that I teach a 1st/2nd grade split bilingual classroom this year, I only tried it with my second graders to help build their academic vocabulary and help prepare them for ISAT (next year, of course)… after all, knowledge=power, right?
Since their vocabulary in English is pretty limited, we started with <underline>cent</underline> given that it has a common meaning in both English and Spanish. We talked about Centavo and Centimetro and discussed what those two words have in common. Right away, hands flew in the air, “Los dos tienen las letras c-e-n-t”. Of course they do. =)

Here they are hard at work with cent =)

We spoke about its meaning alone and its meaning in context. Then one little curious girls asks: “Maestra, si “cent” quiere decir cien, por que cuando me dan presents para mi cumpleaños, no recibo cien? Tiene la palabra cent andentro. Pre-sent” All eyes on me *PANIC MODE ACTIVATED* My answer? “Porque lo compran con sus “centavos” y te lo dan con cent-imiento” (that was purposely spelled wrong, btw!) Lol! I’m so clever when I’m under pressure.

We also went into aqua, same idea, same result=success =) This one reaffirmed my love for teaching, specially when one of my boys says, “Now I know why they call him Aqua man! Because he shoots water!!!” LOL. How exciting for everyone!
Really.=)

I wish I would have taken more pictures because my blog post may not do this justice, but believe me it was so fun and had them going; it’s not too often they ask for another word or graphic organizer. ;)

Lol.
Happy belated Thanksgiving Bloggy Friends! I hope your Thanksgiving was Fantabulous... more than likely, you all are working off the extra pounds by doing some Black Friday shopping for yourselves, the family, and the non-related little ones. I'm sure the deals are amazing, but I value my life waaaay too much to risk getting trampled by all those crazy deal hunters.... call me crazy but I rather pay full price. =)

Top 10 Things I'm Thankful for this year...

10. My alarm clock: God only knows how hard it is for me to wake up in the morning.

9. My neighborhood Dunkin Donuts: I go there so often that when I pull up, the guy pretty much says my order before I do and I’m outta there in NO TIME.

8. Starbucks: even though they require more of my bucks, their hot latte’s are incredible and always at the perfect temperature!

7. My Pathfinder: OK, so it finds more potholes than actual paths, but it gets me to work and right back home AND keeps my bottom warm in the brutal cold.

6. Facebook: It keeps me in contact with the people that actually matter in my life, aside from my immediate family.

5. My Dog: her looks alone make people weary and I know that as long as she’s around, not only will I be “safe” but also, there will never be any leftovers.

3. For old and new friends both online and offline: Let's face it, as teachers we are SUPER busy and it's nice that there are people that help you stay grounded and keep you from losing your mind half of the time... it's also nice knowing that I'm not the only one going through those things. Thank you Blog friends for helping keep the sanity under control. =)

OK, enough yapping and onto my original reason for this post...

Every month we have family projects. Our project for November was our Turkeys in Disguise Family Project. Have you had your students and their families disguise paper turkeys before? The results are AMAZING!

I usually kick off the project by reading the following book:

It's about a Turkey that knows he'll probably be eaten for Thanksgiving so he decides to disguise himself as other farm animals. It's such a CUTE book!

Then, We send home a family letter pleading to help us save the turkeys (along with the turkey template):

And TADA!!!!!!! You get the most incredible results! Some are better than others... can you figure out what they are? My favorite is the very last one! Lol.

This year I'm not only teaching a Bilingual Classroom, I'm also teaching a 1st/2nd split classroom and it's been the CRAZIEST roller coaster ride ever! It really feels like I'm teaching a group of K-3 because these kiddo's are all over the place; talk about the pressure being on!
Anywho, I'm still alive and even more MIA than usual; and although I have not blogged in a while, I have taken many pics for all the future posts I'm planning to write and am looking forward to giving you guys a little inside peeks to the last couple of months school. =)

Let's get this ball rollin'...
Was at the Target dollar section a couple of months back and found this:

In case you're wondering what it is, I believe it's an ice cube tray.
Being a <strike> hoarder</strike> teacher I thought, "this is pretty cool! The kids can sort; add; subtract; etc." and since it came in various colors (pink, blue, green, and purple), I bought one of each. Fast forward a couple of months, they were still in my closet... with the tags on! Hmm... what happened to all the fun activities I had planned in my head when I first saw it? I don't know, but apparently they were hibernating along with all the other stuff I bought for my classroom that day! Apparently, that same day I also bought this:

I'm thinking that the theory behind my thinking was that I could figure out a way for my students to use this simultaneously as a math activity. (Don't you think "math" when you see this?!) In case you were wondering what it is, it's table scatter from the $2.50 section of the Dollar Spot. ;)
So, on with my story.... I somehow convince my coworker and work-bestie to buy the same stuff (lol); she asked me the other day, "so what was your plan for this?!" and proceeds to show me the above items.... my plan, Ladies and Gentlemen? Well, my plan was a subtraction game with a 20 sided dice (and as I'm typing this It came to me that I could have done addition as well, duh! Lol.) Simple enough, right?

Since the tray has 21 spaces you start of with 21... you throw the 20 sided dice. Then fill the ice cube tray with the amount of table scatter indicated on the dice (that's the number you're subtracting from 21). The amount of spaces not filled would be the difference. I hope that makes sense.
I tried it out with two of my second graders they loved it; the only problem was that I didn't have a worksheet to match so there could be some sort of student accountability, sooo.... as you may have guessed.... I created one. (Now I'm thinking I should make an addition one for my Firsties.)

The best part about it is that the table scatter changes year round to match the holidays or season, so the "oooo la la" factor will always be there because the fun stuff (manipulatives) are ever changing. =)

As of today, there is a tentative agreement and hopefully we'll be back in our classrooms by Monday (fingers crossed!).

OK, back to the original programming...

About a year ago, I came across Melissa's Blog and read about her interactive science journals; now, this is something that I had done while teaching 3rd grade, but hadn't thought about doing it in First grade 'til I read her post on how she does it in her classroom and thought it was the cutest idea ever!
Basically students personalize their science notebooks with all things Science on the outside; on the inside they write their notes on one side of the page and glue any artifacts on the opposite side.

So I decided to try it with my students and here are the results...

How cute are these?!

The one thing I forgot to take a picture of? The inside! Lol. Maybe, I'll save that for a future post. ;)

Anywho...

Here is a copy of the letter we sent to our parents. I can't take full credit for this as I'm pretty sure I found it somewhere in Bloggyland first and then modified it to meet my needs. If you read this letter and recognize it as yours (before all the modifications), please let me know. I will link you as the original source... I don't want you to beat me up! Lol.
Did you hear the news? Chicago Public School teachers are on S-T-R-I-K-E. It's a shame too because students need to be in school!
Can you believe that as we're picketing a mom says that we're ruining her vacation time?! The NERVE!!! I cannot begin to tell you all how FURIOUS I became, so much so that I grabbed a marker, flipped <strike>her the bird</strike> my strike sign over and wrote the following in my third language (sarcasm): "Babysitters" on Strike! (See below)

If that's all I am to you, fine... either way, I'm on strike!

On a happier note, here are my two babies showing support...

My Son

My Dog

BY THE WAY: I noticed my grammatical errors. I would make this sign correctly, but 1) we are on strike, we are in the middle of a recession, AND ink is expensive and 2) you guys probably didn't notice. Lol.

Wear RED this week to show your support for all Chicago Public School teachers!
Three months of absolute summer bliss have gone by without me updating my blog once! What kind of a blogger am I?! Obviously, not a very good one =(. Now that I've successfully made it through the 3rd week of school, I thought I'd <strike>FINALLY</STRIKE> dust off the Mac Book Pro and get back into the swing of all Bloggy related things. =)

Some changes have occurred since my last post:

1) One of my First Grade Team Members was not renewed for this school year (we are ALL heart broken!) =( [on a positive note, she is now teaching 2nd grade else where!)
2) I now teach a 1st and 2nd Multiage Classroom (Concern: they are all over the place academically.... I need HELP!)
3) We got a new P.E. Teacher and he is Smokin' HOT. =) (Yummy! Note to self: We see with our eyes, not with our hands (or lips). Lol).

On a positive note, I don't think I've enjoyed summer this much since I was a child! I'm not your get your "get your hair wet in the pool" kinda girl, but I realized something new.... in order for you to enjoy yourself, getting your hair wet is a MUST! Lol.

The end is oh so near.... <strike>I can't wait!</strike> I'm so sad. ; )
I've been trying to crunch every bit of knowledge possible into their little brains! Everyone is D-R-A-I-N-E-D! Especially me! The only thing they have to worry about is figuring out who to play with (that AND the homework packet I'll be sending with them over Summer Break! {Insert evil laugh here} Lol.) While, I have a million things to do and worry about. Oh, how I wish I were 6 again....
*sigh* =)

OK, back to reality AND the original reason for this post....

If you all teach EDM you know that the number grid is something that is used ALL THE TIME! We just covered lesson 9.something and it talked about the patterns of the number grid. Well, while browsing through the Really Good Stuff catalog, I came across the 100 Grid Ordering Cards and, although I really considered making the purchase, I decided to make my own. =)
In fact, I made a whole 40 page packet (20 pages worth of game cards and the other 20 are the game cards with answers for self assessment) dedicated entirely to the patterns of the Number Grid... and named it after my first thought when I saw it: Number Grid Tetris!
My students L-O-V-E it! I swear it keeps them nice and quiet for a long time (especially when they are racing against the minute timer).
I'm still debating whether I should put the document on Teachers Pay Teachers; I guess it'll have to be up to you all to decide if that is something you'd be willing to purchase.
In the mean time, here's a small sample for you to try out in your own classrooms. If you like what you see, leave a comment... it'll help with the decision making process. =)
I know what you’re thinking, “Two posts in 24 hours?! She must be ill.” Lol. OK, so it may not be that exact thought, but I’m sure you are as surprised as me! =)

What brings me to this week’s second post? Well, Candis at I Teach Dual Language has an interesting Linky Party going on and I am honored to be part of it. =)

As part of this Linky Party I have been asked to share a brief description of what a day in my bilingual classroom is like. Well...

... it goes a little something like this:

My instruction is about 90% in Spanish and 10% English (with that percentage decreasing in Spanish and increasing in English as students go on to other grades). I’ll be honest, verbally I consider my classroom more like 50/50, but when it comes to the actual instructional time, it’s 90/10. =)

Here’s what my classroom looks like on a daily basis:

8:45-9:00- Universal Breakfast (breakfast is provided for FREE to all students that would like one.)

9:00-9:10: Math --> Problema del Dia and MClass Practice (Spanish)
During this time students must solve a math word problem and solve 10 operational problems in 10 minutes. The problem of the day is in spanish; I cut it, they glue it on the left page in their Morning Math Notebooks and the operational problems they write on the right page. When they are done, we collect notebooks (so they don't change their answers) and go through the problems together.

9:10-9:20: Morning Meeting (Spanglish [I know it’s not an actual language but I have to sneak English in every chance I can]) We cover calendar, weather, days in school, convert the days in school to dollars and cents. (i.e., if it's day 147, we would have $1.47 in money).

9:20-10:00: Math Lesson, Student Practice; Math Centers (Spanish)
If it's something brand new, we take notes in Math Notebooks (different than Morning Math notebooks). I teach the lesson, they solve a few problems in EDM Math Journals and complete 1 center a day.

10:00-10:40: ESL (English)
We use the program Moving into English; however, I've veered away from the program and started teaching my students word families and Dolch Words. (Basically, lots of English phonics!) Why? Well, I taught 3rd grade bilingual for 3 years; I know what's expected of them in 3rd grade, so teaching them how to read in English is my way of helping them reach that 3rd grade goal.

10:40-11:00 Lunch

11:00-12:10 Reader’s Workshop (Spanish)
Read aloud (even if book is in English, I translate it to their Native Language), Mini Lesson w/ Note taking if it's a new Focus Skill, 2 centers/guided reading groups per day.

12:10-12:45 (MTWF only) PREP (English)
35 minute preps 4 times a week!!!! =(

12:45-1:45: Writer’s Workshop (Spanish)
We use Lucy Calkins, but I wanted them to be more creative than Just a "Small Moment" so I also include a weekly option of writing with a Prompt.

1:45-2:30: Science or Social Studies (Spanish)
FOSS Science with my own Spin (which is: don't follow the guide and explore the kit with students! Lol)
We don't have a Social Studies Program, but we do follow the Hallmark Calendar of "holidays" and celebrate those... including Administrative Assistants Day! Lol.

2:30- Dismissal

I hope that this <strike>short</strike> post gives you an quick idea of what my day in a Spanglish Classroom is like ;)
I'll try to update this post with pictures of some of the activities in the near future!

MIA yet again. So much to do, yet we have so little time. EOY testing is here! So far, my kids ROCK! =) I'm super excited for the end result; my only concern is when they have to count to 118 in a minute! Yes... count to 118 in one minute... un minuto.... 60 seconds! What?! How is that useful as an adult? I'm 28 and have NEVER had the need to count to 118 in one minute in my life! My poor firsties!

Moving on...
Kids are soooooo funny! I've had so many funny conversations with my students since the last post that I decided to share some with you. They may not make you laugh out loud, but I'm sure you'll crack a smile upon reading. =)

Conversation #1
Student: Ms. M, Como se llama ese animal que tiene boca grande y ojos azules?
Me: Cual animal, mi amor?
Student: Ese animal que tiene los ojos grandes y azules!
Me: Estas hablando de un Alaskan Husky? (That's the only animal I know with blue eyes)
Student: Creo que si
(Walks off and seconds later runs back)
Student: Ya recorde! Estaba hablando del Chupacabra!

LOL!!! What?! Does it really have blue eyes?! I would have NEVER guessed!

Convo #2
Student: Ms. M, puedo tomar agua?
Me: Ahorita no, pero cuando termines tu trabajo si podras.
Student: Es que... I have meatballs in my throat.
Me: (looking puzzled) OK, ve a beber un poco de agua.
(she gets her drink and comes back)
Student: Todavia tengo meatballs.
Me: (even more confused) Hippos?! Tienes hipopótamos en la garganta?
Student: NO.... Usted sabe maestra... hippos!
(runs off to her table and I hear her ask, "como se dice 'I have the hippos?' en español". She apparently got her answer and comes back)
Student: Tengo hipo!
Me: OH!!! (laughing) Mi amor, hipo no se dice "hippos" ni "meatballs" en Ingles! Se dice "hiccups".

LOL!! She was so determined to explain this to me... I'm proud that she didn't give up. =) I gave her a sticker for her determination and allowed her to drink enough water to get those darned meatball hippos out of her throat. ;)

Convo #3 (more like a story w/ a convo)

We had a group of High School students come to our school through a program called Junior Achievement. They spend half a day teaching students different things that deal with the economy and the world around them. The young ladies that visited my classroom were teaching my Kiddos about Needs and Wants, Jobs, and communities. Well, in one of the lessons, they were showing my little ones pictures of different jobs and were asking what the job was and what the person that worked that job did; they showed them a picture of a teacher... here is how it went:

JA: Quien me puede decir cual es este trabajo?
Students (in unison): Una maestra!
JA: Muy bien. Es una maestra. Quien me puede decir que es lo que hace una maestra?
(I kid you not, 25 out of 27 shot up in the air! I was taken aback, then it occurred to me....)
ME: Damas y caballeros, APARTE de regañarlos.... que es lo que hace una maestra???
(20 out of those 25 hands came back down!!!)
LOL!!!

I do it cuz I love them. =)Karlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10018026459099118424noreply@blogger.com4
